Description

HISTORY & DESCRIPTION:

MAJESSA is one of only two of the 38ft 6ins size Gentleman’s Motor-Yachts of a series designed by Arthur Comben during the 1930’s to a traditional break-deck style, having a sunken central wheelhouse and owner’s stateroom aft.

MAJESSA, yard number 199 was first commissioned in 1939 but not completed and launched in Thorne until 1947. In April 1949 she was the subject of a dedicated article in the North Sea Yachtsman Magazine.

MAJESSA’S first registered owner in 1947 was William Spowage of Wollaton Vale. John Aharlow of Worksop became her second owner in 1954 followed three years later by Godfrey Holmes Ltd. of Lincoln and a few months later by William Fieldsend of Sheffield. In 1960 Harry Harrop of Rotherham acquired the vessel and kept her on the River Ouse at York. Stanley Quintell of Bradford became the next registered owner in 1968 followed by Paul Moore (RN) of Beverley in 1986. He transported MAJESSA out to Gibraltar where the next owner was Anthony Gordon in 1987. Back on the River Thames in 1989, Colin Kidd bought MAJESSA followed shortly after by David Clarke of Romsley who moved the vessel on to the River Avon at Tewkesbury. In the ownership of David Cadman in 1992 Majessa spent a few years on Lake Windermere before being restored on the South Coast. MAJESSA once more returned to familiar waters on the non-tidal River Severn and Avon at Pershore in 2005 in the present ownership.

Carvel 1.25 inch larch planking on steamed oak timbers all copper fastened. Pine decks, overlaid with marine ply with professionally laid 9mm Marine Deck 2000 deck finish fitted in 1983. Varnished mahogany wheelhouse, aft cabin coamings, hatches, skylights and covering boards.

Extremely original mahogany fitted accommodation with Webasto heating throughout. 12-volt electric lighting, fitted carpets and recent sage green velvet upholstery.

ENGINE ROOM:

Housing a pair of 1983 65hp BMC Commodore 2.5 litre diesel engines with PRM 160 hydraulic gearboxes. Fresh/Sea water cooled with Bowman heat exchangers. Three bladed bronze 20inch propellers. 240-volt shore power and 12-volt electrics. New sacrificial anodes. Calorifier installed in the engine bay.

ON DECK:

Simpson Lawrence oil-bath type anchor windlass and chain. Francis searchlight, boat hooks. Pair of warp lockers. Twin gas bottle stowage on the aft deck. Dinghy davits. Main and mizzen masts. Full deck stanchions with varnished rail.

BROKERS NOTE:

Classic Yacht Brokerage has know Majessa for well over twenty years having sold her for the two previous owners in 1993 and 2005. Traditional motor-yachts like Majessa have become extremely rare and sought-after in recent years particularly those built by a well-respected yard such as Staniland. Recent re-planking to principally the port topsides and some starboard re-planking all in larch from the Ragley Hall Estate. Decks re-furbished Summer 2018 with proprietary Dutch varnish.

A rare opportunity to purchase a very original vessel, a real head turner and a pleasure to own.
